Picking Up the Pieces

It's not a week yet and we are already planing on going to get a new cat. I have decided to continue the blog (hopefully a new cat will pick it up). That brings up the question, how soon is too soon to get a new cat? Is it disrespectful to even consider it? Ernie is anxious to get another cat in the house, except for a couple of years in college, he's never lived without a cat. However, I tend to linger when it comes to mourning. Mortimer was the first cat I ever had living out on my own, and I don't know if its possible to love a cat that much again. What if I love the new cat more? I'm ready for a new roommate but maybe not a family member, some advice would be welcomed.

Mortimer would totally understand, I'm sure. I don't think it's being disrepectful to get a new cat right away. We started the adoption of Niko and Cloud within a week of Texas' passing. You just have to be careful that you aren't rushing into it- make sure the cat you get is one you really want, rather than just rushing to get any old cat. And if you really want to know what Mortimer thinks, go to wherever you memorialized him, or his favorite spot, etc, and meditate there for awhile. I'm sure he'll tell you it's OK. I went to the spot out back where Texas is buried before we picked up the kittens, and made sure to let Tex know I will always love him before we went and got them.

Bert and Ernie, I am sorry that you lost your buddy this week. I think that Mortimer would love that you could take another kitty into your homes and hearts, and would be proud to share you.

After I lost my cat Puss, I planned to get Poppy soon after. Once she had moved in I thought what had I done, as she was very different to Puss and found it difficult at first. But, that was just an adjustment stage for her and me and once we were both settled in, I knew that she was special.

We look forward to following your new adventures.

The last time I lost my cats, I couldn't imagine a life without cats. The only reason why I waited the 3 weeks I did was because I was dealing with a family wedding and all of the relatives. I think it is a testiment to how much love you had and received for/from Mortimer that you want another cat so soon.

When I lost my precious Ninja last October, I cried every day when I came home from work. The silence was deafening!! I didn't mean to look for another cat, but I browsed a local "buy and sell" online and saw Boots. He needed a great home and I need to start to heal. At first I just called him my companion, but now he (and his adopted brother Ozzie) are fully engaged in my heart!!
